Celebrating FMR's 2025 volunteers and young river stewards
Thousands of you gave your time to the river this year. Thank you!
Through hands-on restoration activities, workshops and education programs, FMR's Stewardship & Education team connects individuals, community groups, school groups and youth with our river and its watershed. We aim to enhance people's appreciation of the Mississippi as a source of life and engage participants in working toward a river that's safe, healthy and accessible for all.
We're grateful to the 2,275 people of all ages who participated in volunteer activities with us this year, contributing 6,370 volunteer hours to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed. We're also delighted that we engaged over 1,900 youth through our classroom programs, service-learning opportunities and our Environmental Stewardship Institute summer and school-year programs.
Over 3,000 community members participated in our education events, which included youth programs, public workshops, interpretive hikes, paddling outings and more. Here are some of our favorite highlights from the year.

Volunteer highlights
Nearly 2,300 volunteers contributed 6,370 volunteer hours to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi in 2025. Volunteers joined us at public events, volunteered with ongoing programs or pitched in with their schools, faith communities, community groups and workplaces.
Other volunteers supported FMR behind the scenes — serving on our board of directors, helping with fundraising events and taking photos and videos for our communications. Volunteers also made more logistically complex events possible by helping staff greet attendees, haul and set up gear and serve meals. We are so grateful to all the amazing river stewards who shared their time, talent and energy to support FMR’s mission and build a more interconnected, resilient river community.

Thank you!
In 2025, FMR volunteers and youth program participants showed up for the river and had a tangible impact on improving wildlife habitat and water quality. They demonstrated that when we join together with others and work with patience and persistence, even small acts of stewardship can make a big difference. We look forward to another great year in 2026!
